What is Filter Context?

There are a couple of fundamental concepts that one must learn in order to build effective reports in Power BI and Power Pivot. One of the core concepts is filter context. What is filter context? It is a little confusing if you are coming from an excel background. The easiest way to think about it is to actually walk through an example.

What is filter context?

There are two types of contexts in DAX. The first is filter context and the second is row context. Filter context is used whenever a measure is calculated. For example lets say that you have a measure that sums the sales column in the sales table. Now let’s suppose that you want to see what the total sales are by country. When you add the country dimension to the visual, power bi goes to the sales column  and filters the column for each country and sums the total. Let’s take a closer look at this example.
